The NSW Government has announced that it will establish regulations to mandate the use of residual current devices (safety switches) in all workplaces. Workplaces using electrical hand-held equipment, moveable equipment or equipment used in higher risk working environments must ensure either fixed or portable safety switches are used. Employers will be given 12 months to comply with these new regulations and small businesses will receive a $500 subsidy to pay for the work.
Employers will also be required to ensure that safety switches are incorporated before or as part of the electrical outlet socket. Employers will have four years to comply with this responsibility. According to NECA, these regulations will commence in January 2011.
