An experiment conducted by the New Zealand Electricity Commission has dismissed any claims that energy efficient light bulbs are of a lower quality than traditional light bulbs.
In the NZ Electricity Commission’s RightLight Challenge, more than two thirds of the 850 people surveyed were not able to tell the difference between energy friendly and traditional lights bulbs. 68 per cent of participants could not spot the difference or incorrectly identified which room was lit by the eco-friendly bulb. 49 per cent of those surveyed said they preferred the light in the room lit by the energy efficient light bulb while 18 per cent had no preference for one light over the other.
The experiment was proof that the quality of eco-friendly light bulbs was as good as traditional bulbs. It overturned the perception that energy efficient bulbs emitted less light and were not as nice looking.
Nearly 90 per cent of homes in New Zealand have traditional bulbs in most of their sockets. According to estimates this was costing households at least $129 million a year. The Electricity Commission’s efficient lighting program manager Stuart Ross said "the cost savings from using energy efficient lighting are significant - for some technologies more than $100 over the lifetime of a single bulb”.
