As reported in the Sydney Morning Herald, there has been a surge in the amount of electronic rubbish. According to industry figures and government estimates, approximately 234 million digital lifestyle products will be discarded this year, an increase of 41 million from last year. Out of every 100 computers and TV’s thrown out, only about 9 are recycled. A national scheme has been recommended by Tipping Point: Australia’s E-Waste Crisis. The scheme involves a plan in which used TV’s and computers could be returned to central recycling depots and would be supported by raising costs of TV’s by up to $35 and $10 on laptop computers. The scheme could also be developed to cover all unwanted electronic items.
Jane Castle, a spokeswoman for the Total Environment Centre, said that the schemes were ready and legitimate, on the condition that there is thorough Federal Government supervision and set targets and benchmarks.
The scheme is also set to create 1440 ‘green’ jobs by 2015, if implemented by July this year.
