More than half of the rubbish that Australians throw in the garbage bin could be put to better use in the garden as compost or returned to agricultural land to improve soil quality.
If properly composted, organic waste could help climate change by sinking carbon back into the soil. These huge amounts of organically-active rubbish that is buried in the landfill causes over 3% of Australia’s totally greenhouse gas emissions with its production of methane.
Using compost on land reduces the need for water by 30%. These compost products can also help restore devastated areas such as mining or salinity affected sites, and can even be used to help clean storm water before it travels into the ocean.
