The Prime Minister’s Task Group on Energy Efficiency report was released recently, and the recommended energy-efficiency reforms shown in the report represent considerable incentives for businesses undertaking any energy-efficiency projects. Businesses will be allowed to claim a one-off bonus tax deduction of 50% of the cost of improving the energy efficiency of a building that has a rating of two stars or lower. The incentive will be effective from July 1 next year and will provide a much needed boost to the energy-efficiency sector in Australia.
Increased costs brought about by the introduction of a carbon price will be compensated by the improved energy efficiency of the Australian economy. Businesses that adopt this reform early will benefit greatly if energy prices were to rise or if a carbon economy comes into effect.
“Most businesses recognise that energy efficiency makes good business sense. For most businesses though, core business expenditure has taken priority over expenditure needed to improve energy-efficiency upgrades… Further incentives will encourage businesses to place energy efficiency high on the agenda, which will ultimately mean businesses will increase their profitability, thereby making Australia a stronger player in the global market.”
- Albert Goller, Siemens CEO
